The search for palaeo tracers in the last decade has resulted in a number of potentially useful tracers for past temperature/salinity, productivity, pCO 2 (aq), nutrients, etc.

Recently, it has become evident that some limitations exist on the application of these tracers. Early diagenetic processes may considerably alter the primary by: Concentrations of Al in the surface water inflow from the North Atlantic, which contains between 10 and 20 nM around Gibraltar, are elevated to 55, 59 and 75 nM at the stations occupied.

Abstract. Geological interest in Earth’s orbital variations harks back to the discovery of the Pleistocene ice ages in the by Louis Agassiz, who convinced. The first evidence of significant restriction in Mediterranean–Atlantic exchange was recorded by a reduction of deep-water ventilation all over the Mediterranean at Ma immediately after the Tortonian–Messinian boundary (Kouwenhoven et al.,Kouwenhoven et al.,Seidenkrantz et al., ).

This event is also associated with Cited by: The numbered Mediterranean sapropels (S1, S2, etc.) testify to high productivity and good organic matter preservation (van Helmond et al., ).

Solar-driven oscillations of the Nile discharge may have triggered stratification and some Mediterranean sapropel occurrences (Rohling et al., ), although cyclicity also falls within the range Cited by: Bulk magnetic properties of soils and sediments are often sensitive proxies for environmental change but commonly require interpretation in terms of the different sources of magnetic minerals (or components) that combine to generate them.

Discrimination of different components in the bulk magnetic record is often attempted through endmember unmixing and/or high resolution measurements that can Cited by: Mediterranean Sapropels: Analogues for Petrographic Assessment of Organic Matter in Oil and Gas Shales.

Nitrogen is a principal component of living organisms and comprises the majority of the atmosphere, yet the scarcity of biologically reactive nitrogen in the ocean limits growth and appears to have varied with past changes in physical climate. () Glacial-interglacial variability in deep sea ostracod assemblage composition at IODP Site U in the subpolar North. Especially the eastern Mediterranean is ideal for addressing proposed forcing mechanisms of tropical climate variability (Kontakiotis, ; Casford et al., ) due to its intermediate position between the higher-latitude (i.e.

North Atlantic-influenced) and lower. We use the well-constrained mantle tomography data from the eastern Mediterranean to resolve the Cenozoic history of the retreating Hellenic subduction system.
